Ghana, located in West Africa, is a country known for its rich cultural heritage, vibrant history, and diverse landscapes. With the aim of decentralizing the country’s governance and promoting development at the regional level, Ghana originally had 10 regions that were established in 1987.
However, on December 27th, 2018, a historic referendum was held in Ghana to determine the creation of 6 additional regions. The referendum was a significant moment in Ghana’s history, as it marked the first time that new regions were created since the country gained independence in 1957.
The results of the referendum were overwhelmingly in favor of creating the 6 new regions, and on February 12th, 2019, President Nana Akufo-Addo officially signed the Constitutional Instrument to give legal backing to the creation of the new regions. With the addition of these 6 regions, Ghana now has a total of 16 regions.
